Windows 7, the latest OS from Microsoft, is definitely better than Windows Vista. It is faster and offers better performance, but you can make it even more faster by tweaking it. Here are 3 useful ways to improve the speed and performance of Windows 7:

1) Disable unnecessary visual effects
To disable unnecessary visual effects, right click on “Computer” in windows start menu and choose “Properties”. Click on “Advanced System Settings” at the left pane. Under the “Advanced” tab, click on “Settings” under “Performance” category. Select the “Custom:” option. Look through the list and uncheck the effects that you have no used for it.

2) Disable Windows Aero theme
Windows Aero offers better performance in Win 7 when compared to Vista. However, it still takes up a large amount of resources. You can disable it to obtain better performance. To do so, right click on the desktop and select “Personalize”. Chose one of the standard themes from the right hand side. “Windows 7 Basic” is a good choice.

3) Remove unwanted items from startup menu
Windows automatically adds unwanted items to the startup menu which slows it down. By removing unwanted items from the startup menu, you can make Windows 7 faster. Here is how, you proceed: Press Windows key + R and type “msconfig” in the run dialogue box. Go to the Startup tab. Uncheck the applications that you have no use for.

If you accidentally deleted some files or folders from your hard disk, and if they were sent to the Recycle Bin, you can get them back, provided that you don’t empty the Recycle Bin first. You have three ways to do that:

- To put all items bck where they were, click Restore all items in the toolbar.
- To put a single item back where it was, right-click its icon and choose Restore.
- Optionally, you can select multiple icons, right-click any selected icon, and choose Restore to put all those selected items back where they were.

Each file and folder you restore will be returned to its original location.

If you empty the Recycle Bin, you will need a data recovery software such as Recuva to recover deleted files.

Note: If you securely delete or “shred” files using a specialized software, it is simply impossible to recover the files.

Registry Mechanic is a paid-registry cleaning tool. If your computer’s registry for errors that can slow down and crash your computer. The software comes with a full toolbox for finding and repairing the registry.

Registry Mechanic can detect a range of registry errors such as invalid references to uninstalled programs, missing help files and virtual devices, broken shortcuts, uninstalled fonts and configuration files. Additionally the software can also automatically repair invalid entries at Windows start-up.

The latest version comes with several improvements. These include backups, the Registry defragger, and a Tuneup Services option that optimizes Windows boot services.

On the minus side however, the user interface lags behind. It appears a bit jumbled, and doesn’t present the user with clear-cut directions on how to use the software to clean the directory.

The trial version comes with many restrictions and so it is difficult to measure the effectiveness of the software. The trial version allows for only five sections of the registry to be repaired. Other features like the compacter, defrag, and system optimization do not work in the trial version.

To conclude, Registry Mechanic is a good registry cleaning tool. However, there are better ones available. And some of them are free! For example, CCleaner. You can buy Registry Mechanic for some of its unique and advanced features.

Linux File Systems versus Windows File Systems: How they differ?

Although similar in many ways, the Linux file system has some striking differences from file systems used in MS-DOS and Windows operating systems. Here are a few major differences:

- In MS DOS and Windows file systems, drive letters represent different storage devices. In Linux, all storage devices are fit into the file system hierarchy. So, the fact that all of /usr may be on a separate hard disk or that /mnt/rem1 is a file system from another computer is invisible to the user.

- Slashes, rather than backslashes, are used to separate directory names in Linux. So, C:\home\chris in an MS system is /home/chris in a Linux system.

- Filenames almost always have suffixes in DOS. Although at times you can use that convention in Linux, three-character suffixes have no required meaning in Linux. They can be useful for identifying a file type.

- Every file and directory in a Linux system has permissions and ownership associated with it. Security varies among Microsofto systems. Because DOS and MS Windows began as single-user systems, file ownership was not built into those systems when they were designed. Later releases added features such as file and folder attributes to address this problem.
