Computer Speaker Troubleshooting
Speakers have become a standard computer peripheral component. Most computer speakers do not have any issues for a long time until any hardware damage occurs. However, configuration problems or faulty installation can be quite a daunting task to figure out and fix. Here are some simple tips on troubleshooting your computer speakers.
First and foremost, check if your speakers and/or computer is covered under warranty. If so, all you have to do is to call the customer support and get it fixed. However, if the warranty period has expired, you have two choices–either fix them yourself or take the help of professional computer repair services. If your speakers are not working due to a software problem, you can get it easily fixed. However if there is any hardware damage, you will have to take the help of a professional computer repairman.
The first step would be to check if the speakers are connected properly. Match the pin colors and try playing a song. If you do not hear any sounds, adjust the pin a bit and listen for any sound. Many times, the pin may have loose contact and it can be fixed by inserting it properly into the audio output.
Check if the speakers are getting the correct voltage supply on not. The adapter that supplies current to the speakers may have loose contacts or may have been damaged. If there are any power LEDs on the adapter or the speakers, check if they are glowing or not. If case they are not glowing, try to adjust the adjust the adapter pins and check if it is working or not. You may have to get the adapter replaced if it is the cause of the problem.
Ensure that the proper audio drivers have been installed on your computer. You can do this by going to the Windows control panel and checking the audio configuration. If you are not comfortable with computers, take the help of someone who knows better. In case you have not installed the audio drivers or have mistakenly deleted them, install them from the CD that came with your motherboard. You can also download and install them from website of the company manufacturing the motherboard.
If your motherboard has an onboard sound card, it is possible to disable it via the BIOS. Check whether it is enabled on not. To do this, reset your computer and press the appropriate key when you see something like “Press F2 to enter the BIOS”. Check the various settings in the BIOS and enable it if it is disabled.
If your sound stopped wo suddenly after you made some changes to your computer, if can revert back to the earlier setting by using the “system restore” function. This feature is available only in Windows Xp and Vista. You should only try this as a last resort.
